My wellness journey began 11 years ago after the birth of my third daughter. Before my pregnancy I was strength training, swimming, cycling and running. I was feeling strong and healthy. Within days after her birth, I began having severe joint pain. Little did I know that moment would begin a 10-year journey of researching and experimenting, while hitting brick walls and going down rabbit holes of diagnoses and treatments along the way. I felt like my body was giving out on me. Strong and fit was how I looked but tired, sick, and frustrated was how I felt. I was metabolically unhealthy and didn’t know it.
My list of physical symptoms grew long. Metabolically speaking, I had high cholesterol and my blood sugar was far from being controlled. With constant brain fog, visits to the ER, appointments with specialists, plenty of scans, ultrasounds, and even a colonoscopy, my level of frustration was overwhelming. Thankfully my curiosity and frustrations eventually lead me to Functional Medicine where I was able to understand the “why” behind my symptoms. Through many attempts at making behavioral changes in the areas of nutrition and exercise, I was eventually able to implement sustainable lifestyle changes that lead to the reversal of symptoms and a higher quality of life.
My hope is that I can help others understand the “why” behind their symptoms and help lead them to sustainable lifestyle and behavioral changes necessary to transform their own health, increase their quality of life, and prevent or reverse symptoms of chronic disease.
The expectation to get control of your weight, cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar, all of which lead to chronic disease, can be overwhelming and scary. After a lifetime of habits that brought you to this point, pivoting to make sustainable lifestyle changes on your own may seem impossible.
The good news is that your health story is only partially determined by your DNA and your environment gets to decide the rest. In fact, the latest studies show that 90% of chronic disease is driven by our environment, which is 100% modifiable. Your environment consists of the foods you choose to eat, the way you move your body, the amount of sleep you choose to get each night, the relationships you choose to be a part of, and the amount of stress you allow to consume you.
